Munich is a shopper’s paradise. The two main shopping streets
are Neuhauser Strasse and Kaufinger Strasse located in the city
center. These cater for fancy designer labels, up-market jewellery
etc. The whole of the city centers shopping area stretchingfrom
Odeansplatz-Marianplatz is a pedestrian zone so shoppers can casually
browse at their leisure.
Schwabing to the north of the city also attracts shoppers though
of a different type. This area is located close to the University
so has more off the wall and interesting shops and markets. The
two main streets in this area are Hohenzollern Strasse and Schelling
Strasse.
The main food market is at the area known as Viktualienmarkt.
This is located right beside Marianplatz and is well worth a look.
Locals buy their bread, fruit and veg here but wine, flowers and
everything in between can also be purchased.
The main department stores in Munich are Hertie and Karstadt.
These are dotted around Munich and offer pretty much everything
from food to clothes. The city also has numerous very interesting
flea markets. Keep an eye out for posters to this effect.
For the young or those just young at heart Kaufingtor and Arcade
on Neuhauser Strasse are the best locations to get up to the minute
designer jeans and clothing. People in Munich take pride in their
appearance and shopping is a favourite pastime for many.
